A gau is a unique type of amulet in which Tibetans keep sacred items. The contents may include a small Rupa, Tsa Tsa, sacred medicine (Tib:Dutsi), a thread or fabric blessed by a revered lama, Dharma texts or mantras, special pills made by high lamas and images of deities. It is traditional to ask a Lama to bless your gau. This is then said to have great power to protect the wearer from all manner of obstacles. All the items in our collection are crafted by hand in Nepal by Tibetan and Nepalese artisans and of course our antique pieces are from a bygone age. Each gau is capable of being opened and filled with precious items.

Two Antique Tibetan Gaus or Reliquary Amulets with Lama Statue
Two Antique Tibetan Gaus or Reliquary Amulets with Lama Statue
Our Price: £450.00

This is a very interesting pair of gaus from Tibet that are strung on a wide braided cotton cord to allow them to be worn comfortably across the body. They were found together in this way and have been left in their original found condition. The largest gau is crafted from copper and is decorated with Auspcious Symbols and has a viewing window. Inside the gau is a wooden votive statue that shows signs of considerable age (believed to be much older than the gau). The Lama sits in full lotus posture and holds a skull cup in his left hand and there are faint traces of red paint on his robes. His right arm has long since been lost and perhaps once held a Vajra or was in the mudra of teaching. The base of the statue has been sealed with pitch, so it has clearly been consecrated and most likely filled with a roll of mantras. The round gau has a copper back and has a silver filigree front and is inlaid with blue glass to substitute turquoise. Inside is contained a printed page of a sadhana in Tibetan script.

Origin: Tibet
Age of gaus 19th C (The wooden votive statue is believed to be much earlier)

Tibetan Silver & Turquoise Pendant - 19th C
Huge Tibetan Silver & Turquoise Pendant - 19th C
Our Price: £175.00

A very large turquoise and silver pendant, typically used to adorn the head or headress of a woman, however, it could quite easily be worn as a stand alone pendant or a focal pendant on a necklace. The owner obviously thought the piece was beautiful even with the crack and so do we. It also shows that even damaged pieces of turquoise were highly valued in Tibet. It is very heavy and securely set into the silver. The back of the pendant is made from copper. A lovely old piece with a great feel and full of character.

Rare Iron Phurba or Kila Pendant
Superior Iron Phurba or Kila Amulet Pendant - Large Size - Crafted in Tibet
Our Price: £85.00

A very fine hand crafted iron phurba amulet and practice support from Tibet. We are delighted to be able to offer work from Tibetan artisans as most modern day ritual items are coming from Nepal and India. Each piece is individually hand carved and can take a considerable amount of man hours to complete. It is extremely difficult to carve pieces of this size in such fine detail, so these truly are wearable works of sacred art. They are slightly larger in size than the other iron Phurba pendants in our inventory, which allows finer detail to be displayed. For example you will notice that additional flames have been engraved on the blade. The earrings are also larger and the overall piece is much darker in colour. These are not just amulets that can be worn but are equally valid as ritual supports.

The three sided blade is held in the mouth of the mythical sea creature known as a Makara and represents the power to transform the "three poisons" or kleshas into wisdom. The three wrathful deity heads at the apex represent the three kayas and inwardly represent the three channels of the body.

length approx 7.6 cms
width approx 1.5 cms
Material: Iron
Origin: Tibet

Please note that these pieces are individually crafted. This means each phurba will have its own unique character. Slight variations in detail should be expected.

Tip: If you notice rust appearing on any iron ritual item, simply use a toothbrush (used for this purpose only) to gently apply olive oil to the affected areas and then remove any residue with a soft cloth.

Rare Iron Phurba or Kila Pendant
Rare Iron Phurba or Kila Amulet Pendant
Our Price: £54.95

A superb hand crafted iron phurba amulet and practice support. We have commissioned a Tibetan family who have been making ritual items for more than 50 years to make these for us. They have used the same skills they use to make full size ritual phurbas. We are delighted with the outcome. Each piece is individually hand carved and can take many days to complete. It is extremely difficult to carve pieces of this size in such fine detail, so these truly are wearable works of sacred art. The three sided blade is held in the mouth of the mythical sea creature known as a Makara and represents the power to transform the "three poisons" or kleshas into wisdom. The three wrathful deity heads at the apex represent the three kayas and inwardly represent the three channels of the body.

length approx 5.5 cms
width approx 1.2 cms
Material: Iron

Please note that these pieces are individually crafted. This means each phurba will have its own unique character. Slight variations in detail should be expected.

Tip: If you notice rust appearing on any iron ritual item, simply use a toothbrush (used for this purpose only) to gently apply oilive oil to the affected areas and then remove any residue with a soft cloth.
