Hand prepared incense has been used for many hundreds of years in Tibet and the Himalayan regions. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche concealed a terma text on the use and preparation of incense during his time in Tibet. This was later discovered and the practice was adopted by all the lineages. A daily incense or sang offering is an important aspect of Tibetan culture. Most homes will have a place (usually on a rooftop) reserved solely for incense burning. Traditional incense is typically made from herbs, plant resins, spices and minerals. Some special varieties can contain more than 100 natural ingredients. The use of incense is also an important aspect of Tibetan medicine and is often burnt to alleviate depression, stress and anxiety. Due to the calming effect it has on the mind it is widely used as an aid to meditation.
