Ancient Four Striped Chong dZi - 42.5 mm
Ancient Four Striped Chong dZi - 42.5 mm
Our Price: £2,800.00

A stunning large ancient Chong dZi displaying four stripes. Blood spots can also be seen under magnification. This particular type of Chong (Tibetan Wylie: mChong) is most associated with the Himalayan regions and Tibet. Tibetans value this type more than the other decorated agates that were traded to Tibet from India in ancient times. The colour of the agate material, bead size and style of the decoration is clearly of a different quality to the Indian decorated agates. This may well suggest that there was a bead making industry unique to the Himalayan regions and distinct from other known bead making industries like we find in Burma. These Himalayan beads have now become incredibly scarce and now seldom come into the marketplace for sale.

Very Rare Hand Crafted Iron Khatvanga
Very Rare Hand Crafted Iron Khaṭvāṇga Trident
Our Price: £1,395.00

".....the kapāla (skull-cup) and the khaṭvāṇga (trident) are considered to be two of the greatest substances in the Vajrayana, especially if you are one of the highest Vajrayana practitioners." ~Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche~

"The trishula (khaṭvāṇga) is wielded by Shiva and is said to have been used to sever the original head of Ganesha. Within the Hindu tradition, the three points are said to have a number of meanings and significance. They are commonly said to represent the various trinities -- creation, maintenance and destruction, past, present and future, the three Gunas. When looked upon as a weapon of Shiva, the trishula is said to destroy the three worlds."

Padmasambhava, the second Buddha, who is considered the superme subduer of rakshas (demons) is usually portrayed with a khatvanga or trishula. It leans in the crook of his left arm resting against his shoulder and therefore represents the inseparable connection between himself and his enlightened consort, the Dakini Mandarava.

According to the biography of Padmasambhava (attributed to Yeshe Tsogyal), his trident was an important symbol of his realisation, the points standing for victory over the three poisons -- attraction, aversion, confusion/ignorance. In Dza Patrul Rinpoche's instructions for visualizing Guru Rinpoche, the three points represent essence, nature and compassionate energy, but they also stand for his mastery over the three times: past, present, and future.

This unique piece has been hand crafted by a Tibetan family who have been making ritual items for more than 50 years. It is based on a 15th C trident from East Tibet that is now housed in a museum collection. The base of the iron shaft has a five-prong iron vajra. The three points at the apex are engulfed with lively copper flames and flames also issue forth from the mouth of a laughing skull. The shaft itself is decorated with brass inlay in the damascened style made famous in Derge, East Tibet.

Material: Iron with Copper Flames and
Shaft inlaid with brass in the Derge style.
approx 20 inches x 6.5 inches

Tip: If rust appears on any of your ritual objects made from iron then gently apply olive oil with a toothbrush (used only for this purpose) and dry with a soft dry cloth.

Rare Ritual Iron Vajra Hammer
Our Price: £1,200.00

A heavy ritual iron vajra hammer (Skt: Vajramudgara, Tibetan: Dorje Towa) based on a known Tibetan example dating to the 15th C. The iron vajra hammer is a potent symbol of supreme wisdom and its ability to destroy ignorance. It is a weapon often wielded by the Dharmapalas and protectors such as Garwa Nagpo. Here it represents the ability to smash all opposition that may hinder the practitioner on the path to enlightenment. They are also used in rituals to drive pegs into the ground and thus help define the ritual space and area to be protected. Damascened metalwork (inlaying of metals) was a very popular decorative style in Derge, East Tibet. On this hammer it has been beautifully inlaid with brass that catches the light like gold.

This hammer was a special commission and is not available elsewhere.

Antique Bell & Dorje Set - 19th C
Antique Bell & Dorje Set with Kirtimukha design - 19th C
Our Price: £1,080.00

A great looking antique five prong prong Bell and Dorje set with a lovely patina commensurate with age and ritual use.

The bell displays a protective vajra fence in between a double row of pearls. Above this are the traditional eight heads of the Kirtimukha, which in this case also symbolise the eight heads of the Makara, a mythical crocodile-like creature from Indian mythology and protectors of the mandala. It is on their heads that the mandala palace rests. Each is holding a chain of jewels with various auspicious symbols in between them. Above the Kirtimukha is a another row of vajras that symbolise the 16 emptinesses. Above this is an eight petalled lotus seat for the eight bodhisattvas and their consorts The five prong handle is worn smooth from extensive handling and is imbued with countless years of ritual use.

There is a tiny hole in the top of the bell and this is perhaps an original casting flaw. In any event it does not effect the sound which is pleasing, bright and well balanced. The five prong vajra is not the original vajra, however, it is well matched and from the same period. It is also well cast and has a very nice usage patina. A great set imbued with countless years of ritual use.

Age: 19th C or earlier

The bell is approximately 17.5 cms high and has a 9.5 cm diameter
Vajra measures 4.5 inches

RARE JADE MILAREPA CARVING - 5 inches
RARE JADE MILAREPA CARVING - 5 inches
Our Price: £550.00

A rare green nephrite jade Milarepa seated within a rocky outcrop or cave. This is a hand carved one off piece that you will not find in any other store. Stone statues of Tibetan deities and lineage gurus are particularly hard to source. The jade material was sourced in Canada and then shipped to Thailand where it was carved by a master stone carver. It is also carved from the same material as the world famous 9ft Jade Buddha for Universal Peace.

Milarepa was famous for his spontaneous songs of realisation. During his 12 years of strict retreat he subsisted on nettle tea and eventually it turned his skin green, hence the reason he is often portrayed as green in colour. Crafting his image from green jade is therefore very appropriate.

RARE DZOGCHEN BELL & DORJE SET - Master Quality Iron 9 Prong Vajra & Iron Nine Prong Handle - Dark Finish
Our Price: £550.00

An extremely rare nine prong bell and dorje set with iron handle and iron vajra -- Each set is made by a Tibetan family who have been making authentic bells and ritual items for more than 50 years. We have waited more than 18 months to have 10 bells made in this quality. As far as we are aware, this is the first time iron handled bell and vajra sets have been offered for sale in or outside of Asia in recent times. Each iron handle and vajra are carved entirely by hand and this requires incredible skill as iron is notoriously difficult to work with. Since there are few who can successfully undertake this kind of workmanship, we are incredibly fortunate to be able to offer them here.

This particular style is favoured by Nyingma practitioners as it has the traditional hole in the handle that represents the wisdom of emptiness. Iron has also been a sought after metal for ritual phurbas and vajras since ancient times and very precious pieces are believed to be made from meteoric iron. Iron has a unique feel and is often seen to have a more wrathful quality than other metals.
