Pumtek are decorated stone beads that originate from Burma. Some are ancient, some are antique and some are early to late 20th century creations. Pumtek means buried thunderbolt and are highly prized by the Chin tribe of Burma. The majority of these beads are made from silicified wood in the form of opal or chalcedony. By forming in this manner the original form and structure of the wood is often preserved. This is why many Pumtek beads appear to display a woody grain.
