Here you will find ancient and antique prized stone beads from Burma. Including Pumtek and other stone beads believed to be from the Pyu/Tircul period or earlier.

The word Pumtek means 'buried thunderbolt' and should be regarded as the generic name for a large variety of decorated stone beads found in Burma. In the same way that the word dZi (Wylie: gZi) is the generic name for a large variety of decorated stone beads found in Tibet and the Himalayan regions. Pumtek are unique in that they are made from silicified/opalised/fossilised wood and in some cases agate. Today they are found mainly on heirloom necklaces of the Chin tribe. The earliest Pumtek (often highly contrasted black and white decorated stone beads) possibly date to 400 BCE. Early 20th century Burmese bead makers also adopted the name Pumtek for their own newly created fossil wood beads. These beads were designed to replicate the Pumtek found on their much prized heirloom necklaces. A small Burmese cottage industry was revived in the 1990s and once again bead makers tried to replicate much earlier Pumtek. A wave of heirloom beads first appeared in the West during the 1980s and they were soon to end up in private collections. They were very affordable at this time because little was known about them. Nowadays they command very high prices in Asia and have started to gain special attention elsewhere. see our blog

Ancient = more than 1000 years old. Antique = 100 to 1000 years old.

They don't get much better than this! Here we have a highly collectible necklace with genuine ancient stone beads from Burma. Includes decorated agate eye beads, banded agates, green stone beads (possibly green chalcedony or a jade variety) and decorated and undecorated carnelians. The variety of beads on this necklace show just how skilled the Burmese were at working with stone. In our opinion they were in a class of their own. The round focal bead is very dZi-like in quality and displays a rare double zig zag design. These beads came out of Burma in the 1980s and have remained in private collections since that time.

Pumtek are decorated stone beads that originate from Burma. Some are ancient, some are antique and some are early to late 20th century creations. Pumtek means buried thunderbolt and are highly prized by the Chin tribe of Burma. The majority of these beads are made from silicified wood in the form of opal or chalcedony. By forming in this manner the original form and structure of the wood is often preserved. This is why many Pumtek beads appear to display a woody grain.
