This is one of the most interesting pieces in the Stone Routes collection. Here we have a very old ivory ring that has been decorated with circular eyes and housed in a silver gau container. The back is made from copper. Ivory rings are typically worn as hair ornaments by men in East Tibet. This piece is extremely old and is likely to date much earlier than the silver container. The container has holes in the side to allow cord to pass through this and the ivory, thus allowing it to be worn as a necklace. A beautiful piece with a fine usage patina. Inside the gau and sitting behind the ivory is a small parchment of printed paper with various symbols of an amuletic nature.

Origin: Collected in Tibet in the 1980s and part of the Stone Routes Collection.
Weight: 53 grams
45 mm x 18 mm (depth)
Age: 19th C (Ivory may be earlier)
Material: Tibetan Silver, Copper and Ivory.
