This is very nice antique Tibetan melong amulet that displays the Nine Palaces, Eight Trigrams and 12 animals of the zodiac. This piece is unusual in having a peacock at the apex. The peacock is often associated with the transformation of poison into wisdom. In Asia the feathers of the peacock are also believed to bring protection. The reverse has faint traces of a lotus flower.

Tibetan Astrology like the Chinese system is organised according to the 12 Animal Signs. There is a legend that tells of Lord Buddha summoning all the animals to come to him before his parinirvana. It is said that 12 animals came to honour him. The Buddha rewarded each animal by naming a year after them in the order they arrived. First came the Rat, then the Ox, the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and lastly the Pig.

Melong amulets are believed to ward off negativity, including protection from unfavourable planetary alignments.
