A lovely understated Tibetan tiger rug from the Tashi Murik collection. Tiger designs are amongst the most sought after of all the Tibetan rugs. Their unique beauty makes them an attractive addition to any home. They are valued by Tibetans because of their association with tantric Buddhism. Tiger rugs have been used by Yogins and high lamas for centuries in Tibet, India and the Himalayan regions. In Tibet they are prized as meditation and yoga seats and are believed to provide spiritual protection for the meditator. There are many kinds of Tibetan tiger rug designs - some consist of realistic renderings of actual tiger pelts, whilst others display more abstract tiger stripes.

The wool comes from sheep reared at an altitude of up to 17,000 feet above sea level. Tibetan highland sheep produce a characteristic thick fleece that has a high tensile strength and is rich in lanolin. The high lanolin content gives a silky sheen and keeps the wool soft and supple, it also acts as an anti-staining agent. Carpets made of this wool will mellow beautifully and last for generations.
