A stunning old piece that is made from coconut shell. The old carnelians look very striking and have been strung in groups of three, which seems to be traditional with this type of mala. Also includes old counters and various beads including conch or chank shell. The is an interesting mala with a wonderful usage patina. Also includes a rarely seen brass and copper dorje, which is traditionally used to attach the mala to a belt or item of clothing--which of course stops the mala from being lost when not in use.

These old disc bead malas are now rarely seen and this is one of only a handful we have offered for sale in the last 10 years.

99 coconut disc beads plus 9 x Carnelian beads in groups of 3 = 108

The two carnelians adjacent to the single chank shell guru bead would not be counted as part of your repetitions.

Age: early to mid 20th Century with some of the single beads being 19th century creations.
Origin: Tibet
