The Lingam (also, Linga, Lingham, Shiva linga) is revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva. They are seen in and outside of temples throughout India and Nepal. Lord Shiva is one of the principal Hindu deities, worshiped as the destroyer and restorer of worlds and is also seen in numerous other forms. In the Shaiva tradition, he is seen as the Supreme Being. He is worshipped in the form of the Lingam, representing absolute and single power of this universe. Guru Padmasambhava in his younger years was also a yogi in the Shaiva tradition, and he was known at this time as Nyima Özer or Rays of the Sun. It is also important to recognise that in certain Vajrayana teachings, Shiva is seen as the outer form of Chakrasamvara, an extremely important tantric deity. These stones originate from the Narmada River, which is a tributary of the sacred Ganges River and one of the seven holy places in India.
