Jasper is a form of chalcedony and was a very sought after material in antiquity. The material is opaque and the colour is usually red, yellow, brown or green. The rarest colour is blue. Green jasper is known to have been used to make bow drills in Mehrgarh (present day Pakistan) between 4th-5th millennium BCE.

A delightful yellowish brown British jasper bead that has been hand carved to display a raised Buddha. The carving represents the Buddha Ratnasambhava, one of the five Dhyani Buddhas. Buddha Ratnasambhava's name means 'Jewel Born' and he is yellow in colour.
