HEALTH THROUGH BALANCE
Dr. Yeshi Donden was born in 1929 and received the traditional Tibetan medical training in Lhasa, Tibet. From 1960, he served for over two decades as the personal physician to H.H. the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India where he also re-established the Tibetan Medical Center.
This book presents a series of lectures given by Dr Donden at the University of Virginia. He explains the basic system of Tibetan medicine and how it has been practiced and enhanced over 1000 years by Tibetan doctors. He also describes how Tibetan medicine works holistically with the person. Health and illness are considered in terms of the balance between three humors of the body; diagnosis and treatment involve not only assessing patterns of symptoms and prescibing medicines, but also taking account of thought patterns, personality, season, age, climatic condition, diet, behavior, and physical surroundings.
An excellent, informative and clearly written book that complements the book by Terry Clifford which focuses more particularly on the treatment of psychiatric problems.
paperback; 252 pages.
TIBETAN BUDDHIST MEDICINE AND PSYCHIATRY
Out of Print.
Psychiatric nurse, Terry Clifford, travelled to Tibet, Nepal and Northern India to study traditional Tibetan medical and psychiatric methods. Deeply impressed by her personal qualities and dedication, her work was blessed by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche; His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa bestowed the Medicine Buddha initiation. Tibetan doctors translated esoteric Tibetan medical texts and concepts, shared experiences from their medical practices and gave her traditional Tibetan herbal formulas.
Her authoritative work, whilst giving particular emphesis to the treatment of psychiatric problems, reflects the fundamental interconnectedness of Tibetan general medicine and psychiatry with Buddhist philosophy. Her writing flows with insight, humour and intelligence. The depth of her understanding and clarity of thought resulting in a lucid and inteligible account which presents for the first time a comprehensive introduction to a medical tradition that has much to offer the Western world.
paperback; 268 pages.
