Product Code: SRB-ARTS-RUG1

Description

A lovely looking deep red Tibetan Takyab or pack animal rug. This well sized piece was probably used on the lead animal of a Yak train. The wide shape with horns is also very Yak-like and more suited to a Yak than a horse or mule. It is decorated with Yungdrung symbols (Swastikas) and an eternal knot motif. These rugs were also believed to bless the animal at the lead of the train, so that all journeys were accomplished without obstacles. If you turn this piece upside down the letters O and K can be read. The overall condition of the rug is very good with minor weathering commensurate with age. The backside is covered with fabric that is frayed and worn through in places.

Origin: Collected in Tibet in the 1980s and part of the Stone Routes Collection.
17 inches x 14 inches
Age: Early 20th C
