Product Code: TANGAU23

Description

A traditional silver with copper back traveling gau with auspicious symbols. It has a window to view a small antique gilded copper statue of an unknown deity (possibly a seated Machik Labdron with an extended arm holding a damaru). A single piece of turquoise remains in the headress and gilt remains on the front of the body. The deity is attached to a cushioned backrest by copper wire and also sits on a cushion to allow easy viewing in the window. This is an unusual piece because gaus are rarely discovered with their original contents. The statue is likely to pre-date the gau and was clearly a cherished personal practice support for someone. A collectible piece from a bygone age.

Origin: Tibet, Himalayas
Condition: Good with some corrosion and pitting to the copper at the back.
Age: 19th century or earlier
height of deity approx 60 mm
height of gau approx 100 mm (4 inches)
depth of gau approx 40 mm
width of gau appox 70 mm
