Description

A great looking antique Tibetan leather Chuckmuck purse that would have been worn by both men and women. Ornamented on the front and reverse with silver metalwork and silver stud mounts. It also displays two silver fish, which represent fearlessness in Buddhism and are one of the eight auspicious symbols or Ashtamangala. The front is inlaid with natural red coral. The top has a suspension hoop to allow it to be hung from a strap. The strap on this piece also displays silver stud mounts. A great piece with a lovely usage patina.

Purses such as this also tell a story. Silver studs, plaques and buttons were often removed from purses to be sold or bartered with. On the reverse of this case some studs have been removed long ago, probably to strike a deal or to free up some much needed revenue.

Origin: Collected in Tibet in the 1980s and part of the Stone Routes Collection.
Material: Leather, Tibetan Silver & Coral
Size: width = 4.7 inches height = 2.8 inches depth = 1.2 inches
Age: 19th Century
