Description

A great looking antique leather tinder pouch or Chuckmuck (Tibetan: Mechag). Tinder and pieces of flint or quartz are traditionally held inside the pouch and a steel striker is attached to the bottom. Being worn on a belt or strap meant that it was always at hand and a fire could be started quickly. It was therefore an essential tool for a travelling nomad. This piece is mounted on the front and reverse with a silver plaque and displays a double fish motif. It is also inset with a natural blue turquoise cabachon. The top has a suspension hoop to allow it to be hung from a strap. A great piece with a lovely usage patina.

Origin: Collected in Tibet in the 1980s and part of the Stone Routes Collection.
Type: A Chuckmuck strap mount (Tibetan: Mechag)
Material: Leather, Tibetan Silver plaque on the front, steel, brass and turquoise
Size: width = 4.5 inches height = 3.1 inches depth = 18 mm
Age: 19th Century
