Here we have a magnificent Shagreen (Stingray) case which is in superfine condition and displays a lovely patina. Under magnification it could be mistaken for green turquoise with a dense matrix. The Lenses are made from rock crystal (smokey quartz). This type of lens was very sought after for its medicinal benefits in Tibet. It is believed that looking through a natural crystal lens heals and soothes ailments asscoiated with the eyes. They were also worn as snow glasses and to reduce the glare of the sun. Popular with sky gazing yogins! Unlike other glasses they are not used for magnifying. The frame is stamped with a makers seal. This is certainly the finest set of its kind that we have come across and was acquired from an Asian art dealer in London. Prior to 1959 a set of spectacles like this was extremely valuable in Tibet and could fetch as much as a good horse.

Condition: Excellent. No pitting to the case or damage to the lenses.
Material: Wood with copper lining and Shagreen outer lining.
Age: 19th Century
