Ancient Decorated Carnelian with Cuneiform Script
Rare Ancient Decorated Carnelian with Cuneiform Script - 38 mm
Our Price: £795.00

A very rare large ancient carnelian bead displaying what appears to be cuneiform characters. This writing system dates back to Mesopotamian times and is as early as 3000 BCE and as late as 100 CE. Unfortunately the meaning on this bead has yet to be revealed. The colour of this bead (dark lines on pinkish grey body) probably suggests that some fire damage occurred. It could have been overheated by the bead maker when applying the decoration or perhaps it happened as the result of a cremation. It is also possible that the dark lines were intentional but a lighter base colour didn't take properly to the stone. There is some weathering to the body and a few surface digs, but it still remains robust and very suitable to be worn. This is the only bead of its type we have handled or ever seen for sale, so it is extremely rare amongst carnelians.

Condition: Mostly very good with weathering and surface fissures commensurate with age.

Bow Shaped Stone Bead
Large Bow Shaped Stone Bead (possibly ancient)
Our Price: £295.00

A very large bow shaped stone bead of rare appearance and size. The bead has been crafted from stone (possibly chlorite schist) and displays a central band of quartz. This bead is in perfect condition. It was originally purchased strung on a strand with ancient Pyu beads. This is the only example of a bow shaped bead made from this material that we have seen. It is therefore difficult to say whether it is genuinely ancient. Large bow shaped beads have certainly been found in Burma and the Himalayan regions and some may be well over 2000 years old.

Whether this bead was originally from Burma or was traded from elsewhere is unknown. Round beads (believed to be of ancient origin) made from the same material have certainly been found in India and the Indus Valley region, so perhaps this was where it was originally crafted. It is a very handsome one of a kind bead and would make a stunning focal bead on necklace.
