Ancient Four Striped Chong dZi - 30 mm
Our Price: £1,800.00

A rare quality ancient Chong dZi displaying four stripes. Dense blood spots can be seen throughout the body. This particular type of Chong (Tibetan Wylie: mChong) is most associated with the Himalayan regions and Tibet. Tibetans value this type more greatly than the decorated agates and carnelians that were traded to Tibet from India in ancient times. The colour of the agate material, bead size and style of the decoration is clearly of a different quality to the Indian decorated agates and this may well suggest that there was a bead making industry that was unique to the Himalayan regions and distinct from other known bead making industries like we find in Burma. These beads have now become incredibly scarce and seldom come into the marketplace for sale.

Ancient Decorated Carnelian with Cuneiform Script
Rare Ancient Decorated Carnelian with Cuneiform Script - 38 mm
Our Price: £795.00

A very rare large ancient carnelian bead displaying what appears to be cuneiform characters. This writing system dates back to Mesopotamian times and is as early as 3000 BCE and as late as 100 CE. Unfortunately the meaning on this bead has yet to be revealed. The colour of this bead (dark lines on pinkish grey body) probably suggests that some fire damage occurred. It could have been overheated by the bead maker when applying the decoration or perhaps it happened as the result of a cremation. It is also possible that the dark lines were intentional but a lighter base colour didn't take properly to the stone. There is some weathering to the body and a few surface digs, but it still remains robust and very suitable to be worn. This is the only bead of its type we have handled or ever seen for sale, so it is extremely rare amongst carnelians.

Condition: Mostly very good with weathering and surface fissures commensurate with age.
