Rare Pumtek Stone Bead Necklace

A highly collectible necklace with genuine antique and ancient Pumtek beads. These beads are all from strands that came out of Burma in the 1980s and 90s. The Chin people are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group that migrated to Burma more than 1000 years ago. The Chins mix ancient and antique beads on their prized strands, and it is not always easy to tell them apart. Many of these beads display wonderful wear at their perforations and a patina that is only seen on very old beads. It is clear there was a great range of skills needed to create Pumtek in antiquity. A single bead might take weeks to complete. Beads can vary in colour and quality due to the skill of the bead maker and the materials being used. Some of the earliest beads have a dZi-like quality to them, and would be valued as such if found within a Tibetan context. Pumtek are interesting because beads were made from a variety of silicified woods. Some beads are more opalised and others appear to display a woody grain for example.
This necklace also has some rare size pumteks. It includes various long Tiger stripe beads and various round beads with stripes. The large tabular focal bead (approx 33 mm) is particularly beautiful and has slight loss to the ends, which is indicative of great age. Genuine old Pumtek beads have almost vanished from the marketplace in recent years. Collectors are only now beginning to realise the importance of these beads. The Burmese were master bead makers and Pumtek are certainly as important as the Himalayan dZi, although cost a fraction of the price.
The largest Tiger stripe measures 52 mm x 12 mm.
Round beads 10 mm to 15 mm
The tabular focal bead and a couple of the ancient Tiger stripe pumteks have a small amount of loss to the ends, otherwise the beads remain in excellent condition.

An instant collection of wonderful ancient stone beads. This necklace has a nice variety of ancient banded agates, which were sourced in Nepal but probably originated in Afghanistan. The huge hard stone focal bead has been incised with what appears to be the cuneiform script (the meaning on this bead is unknown). This script was in use in Western Asia from around the 4th Millenium BCE to the 1st Century CE. The stone appears to be much harder than steatite so may be a variety of serpentine. There are some very colourful agates on this strand and one bead appears to be a damaged ancient Phum dZi. Many beads display a surface worn smooth from possibly hundreds of years of close contact to the body.
